Former Hillcrest standout athlete Kyler Newman made his Spartan Mens basketball debut on Friday night and came through with a 17 point performance on 6-of-7 shooting. He also had 3 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Spartans past Mesabi Range 82-67 on the first day of the Spartan Classic.
Aaron Solberg contributed a double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds), while adding 3 assists and 3 blocked shots. Austin Miller scored 15 points, Martin LaFond had 11 and TJ Martin had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
The Spartans made 49% (27-55) of their field goal attempts and buried 82% (23-28) of their free thows.
Mesabi Range shot just 33.3% (22-66) on the night. They were led by Calvin Lee (16 points, 8 rebounds), William Howard (11 points) and Markis Watkins (10 points, 4 rebounds). Alban Cooke came off the bench to score 9 points for the Norse.
M State (6-6) will host Itasca Community College at 5:00pm Saturday.
