Spartans Split With Lake Michigan College

The Spartans began their spring break trip in Florida with a doubleheader vs Lake Michigan College  The Spartans were able to secure the win in game one 8-5 but were unable to rally in game two and lost 9-6.  The Spartans improved their record to 3-1 on the season. 

Game 1:

The Spartans fell behind early as they gave up a run in the top of the first.  Trailing 1-0 the Spartans got 2 run single from Kyle Doup in the bottom of the 2nd.  They were able to add another run to take lead 3-1.   Lake Michigan College came back and tied it in the top of the third, but Jake Dykhoff and Dane Schwirtz were able to collect RBI singles to put the Spartans up 5-3.  Lake Michigan was able to tie it back up in the next inning.  Dane Schwirz answered in the bottom of the fifth with a 3 run home run to give the Spartans a 8-5 lead.  That was all they needed as went on and won the game 8-5. 

Justin Dykhoff picked up the win throwing all seven innings.  He gave up 8 hits and 2 runs.  He struck out 4 and walked two.  Schwirtz finished 3-3 with a HR and 4 RBIs.  Kyle Doup went 3-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. 

Game 2:

The Spartans looked to complete the sweep of Lake Michigan but six errors did them in.  Lake Michigan was able to capitalize on the Spartan miscues to gain a 9-2 lead.  The Spartans were able to rally some in the top of the seventh by adding four runs but could not complete the comeback.  The Spartans ended up falling 9-6. 

Sawyer Rolland took the loss throwing 2 1/3 innings.  He gave up 8 hits and two earned runs.  Denny Lanarz pitched 2 innings and Westley Johnson added 1 2/3 innings to finish out the game. 

Jake Dykhoff finished the game 1-2 with a double and 2 RBIs.  Schwirtz collected another double.  Ben Deiber, Tom Magnusson, and Will Magnusson each added a RBI for the Spartans.

The Spartans will play another doubleheader on Sunday vs #14 Lansing Community College.  First pitch is scheduled 9:00am.
