Spartan Men Overcome 13 Point Deficit to Beat Yellowjackets in Overtime
Mason Muir buried a corner 3 at the end of regulation to tie the game at 67-67 and force overtime for M State against Rochester on Wednesday night in Fergus Falls. The Spartans overcame a 13 point second half deficit and went on to post an 81-73 overtime win over the Yellowjackets.
Foday Sheriff scored 39 points on 14-of-21 shooting and 9-of-13 free throw shooting, and secured 13 rebounds to complete his double-double. Muir was also in double digits with 23 points, while adding 4 assists. Yonis Mohamud finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals.
M State struggled from outside the arc, hitting only 16.7% (5-30) of their 3-point attempts. The Spartans shot 47% (31-66) overall and made only 63.6% (14-22) of their free throws. They held a 35-32 edge on the boards. M State scored 22 points off 18 Rochester turnovers.
Rochester was led by Laden Nerison (22 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Jamison Lien (21 points, 4 rebounds) and Leroy Barnes (10 points, 4 rebounds). Cole Johnson had a team high 11 rebounds and dished out 5 assists, and Charlie Morning contributed 5 assists and 3 steals.
With the win the Spartans clinch the top seed from the MCAC South Division. They will open post season play on Friday, February 28 at 5:00pm at Anoka-Ramsey in Coon Rapids.
M State (25-2, 10-1 MCAC South) will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday at 3:00pm in St. Cloud.
